Syracuse gets past Notre Dame, 11-9, to advance to NCAA Lacrosse Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Syracuse scored three goals in 3:09 of the fourth quarter to overcome a 9-8 deficit and defeat Notre Dame 11-9 in an NCAA Men’s Division I quarterfinal lacrosse game Sunday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The third-seeded Orangemen improve to 14-2 and advance to the semifinal against Virginia next Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
 
Dan Hardy had three goals and an assist, and goaltender John Galloway made 11 saves, including two stellar stops with less than seven minutes remaining, to keep the game tied for Syracuse. Joey Kemp had 19 saves, while Alex Wharton, Michael Podgajny and Peter Christman each had two goals for the Fighting Irish, which completed its season at 14-3.
 
Notre Dame’s inability to control faceoffs allowed Syracuse to control much of the first half and take a 6-2 lead. With the score tied at 1-1, the Orangemen took a 5-1 lead on goals by Hardy, Stephen Keogh, Steven Brooks and Hardy again. Only excellent play by Kemp, who made 11 saves in the first half, kept Notre Dame in the game.
 
Syracuse continued to dominate the faceoffs, but its sloppy play in the third quarter allowed the Fighting Irish back in the game. Podgajny, Christman, Grant Krebs, Wharton and Christman again scored unanswered goals for a 7-6 Notre Dame lead. With the Irish leading 9-8, Patrick Perritt tied the game with 6:23 left to play. Hardy scored the game winner with 5:05 left, and Brooks gave the Orangemen an insurance goal less than two minutes later.
 
Syracuse was a perfect two for two in extra-man attempts, while Notre Dame was successful in one of two opportunities. The Orangemen outshot the Irish 48-34 and won 17 of 24 faceoffs.
