Georgia Post-Game Notes . . . September 27, 2008 vs. No. 8 Alabama
Winning Streak Snapped: Georgia saw its 11-game winning streak end
tonight, which was the second longest active streak of any Division I-A
team. It was the longest streak since the Bulldogs went 11-0 during the
1982 season. Prior to tonight, Georgia's last loss was in 2007 at
Tennessee 35-14. Georgia trailed in that contest 28-0 at the half.
Tonight, the Bulldogs' 31-0 deficit against Alabama was the largest
deficit since Georgia trailed Auburn 31-0 here in 1999 at halftime.
Tonight, the Bulldogs responded in the second half, outscoring the
Crimson Tide 30-10 but the rally fell short in a 41-30 loss.
Miller Takes It To The House: Junior cornerback Prince Miller returned
a punt in the fourth quarter for a 92-yard touchdown. This was the
second-longest punt return in Georgia history and the longest since
Jimmy Campagna returned a punt a record 100 yards for a TD in 1952.
This was the first punt return for a TD since Mikey Henderson's
86-yard return against Tennessee in 2006. This was only Miller's second
career punt return, although his first came in 2006 against UAB when he
was credited with a 16-yard return after blocking a punt.
Top 10 Matchups: Tonight was only the ninth ever contest featuring a
pair of top 10 ranked opponents in Sanford Stadium, and the Bulldogs
are now 5-4 in these games. It was only the sixth time in the history
of the Alabama series that it featured a pair of ranked teams, and it
was the first time Georgia lost in such a meeting.
Walsh Connects/Lindley Executes On-Side Kick: Freshman place kicker
Blair Walsh connected on a 43-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs on
the scoreboard with 11:07 left in the third quarter. Walsh is now
6-for-8 and he now has three kicks that have been longer than 40 yards.
True freshman Jamie Lindley executed a successful onside kick that was
recovered by senior CJ Byrd. It was the first successful one by the
Bulldogs since the 2007 Ole Miss game when Prince Miller recovered one
by Brandon Coutu. Tonight Georgia converted it into a TD.
Renner Blocks Another: Redshirt freshman split end Zach Renner blocked
a punt in the second straight game on Saturday late in the third
quarter. The last Bulldog to block two punts in the same season was
defensive end David Pollack. Renner also blocked a punt against
Arizona State last week. Renner's block led to Georgia's first
touchdown of the game.
Stafford Posts Career High in Completions: Junior QB Matthew Stafford
(24-for-42, 274 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) is now 21-5 as a starter .
Stafford's 24 completions was a career high, his previous best was 20
in 32 attempts against Miss. State in 2006. Stafford leads the Bulldogs
with 24 consecutive games started. Senior flanker Mohamed Massaquoi,
who snagged four of Stafford's passes for 33 yards, extended his streak
to 26 straight games with at least one catch.
Starters: Redshirt freshman Justin Houston (DE) made his first career
start tonight. Also of note, senior fullback Brannan Southerland
played for the first time this season after being sidelined due to an
ankle injury. Southerland played "personal protector" on the punt team
against Alabama.
Turnovers: Freshman receiver A.J. Green's fumble in the second quarter
was only the third turnover for the Bulldogs this season. It was also
the first turnover that an opponent has converted into points in 2008.
Green finished as the team's leading receiver with six catches for 88
yards and 1 TD.
Curran, Dent Leading Tacklers: Sophomore Rennie Curran led the team in
tackles for the third time this season, registering a career-high with
14 stops tonight including 10 solo. Sophomore linebacker Akeem Dent
also set a career-high with 10 stops including one sack.
Injury Report: Senior MLB Dannell Ellerbe left the game early in the
first quarter with a knee injury and did not return. Junior split end
Kris Durham injured his right ankle early in the third quarter and did
not return.
Up Next: After an open date next week, the Bulldogs (4-1, 1-1 SEC) stay
in Athens to face Tennessee (1-3, 0-2 SEC) on Saturday, Oct. 11.
Tennessee leads the overall series 20-15-2.
