Amherst,
Mass. - Senior attackman David Maderia scored three
goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Burke made 16
saves, to lead the resurgent Brown men's lacrosse team to its fourth
straight win, a 7-4 victory over UMass at Garbor Field.
The win
lifts the Bears to 4-1 for the season, while UMass, the runner-up in
the National Championship game a year ago, falls to 1-4
overall.
Brown never trailed in the game, and got early goals from Madeira and
freshman Zach Caldwell , while the Minutemen received
goals from Rory Pedrick and Evan Blum, to tie the score, 2-2, midway
through the second quarter.
Coach Lars Tiffany's team broke the game open by scoring three
straight goals, with Madeira's second goal giving the Bears a 3-2 lead
at the half, and goals by sophomore Jack Walsh and
freshman Thomas Muldoon extending the Bears lead to 5-2
with 10:46 left in the third quarter.
UMass stopped the Bears' scoring streak with a goal at 9:59 of the
third quarter, but Caldwell added his second goal of the game with
just five seconds remaining in the quarter to lift the Bears to a 6-3
advantage after three quarters.
Brett Garber scored with 13:25 left in the fourth quarter to pull the
Minutemen to within two goals of the Bears, 6-4. Madeira closed
the door on UMass, completing the hat-trick by scoring his third goal
with 5:13 remaining to put the game out of reach.
Burke was outstanding in the Brown goal, setting the tone early with
seven saves in the first-quarter to stifle the Minutemen. Burke
faced 35 UMass shots in making his 16 saves.
Madeira added an assist to go with his three goals, while Muldoon
handed out two assists with his one goal.
The Bears will be back in action again on Saturday, March 24, opening
their Ivy League season against Dartmouth in Hanover, New
Hampshire.
