HANOVER, N.H. - As the two teams lined up for the customary post-game handshake, one of the Dartmouth players said, "It's a good day to be green."
In Saturday's St. Patrick's Day matchup, the Big Green knocked off the
No. 16 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, 7-6, as freshman Ari Sussman contributed three goals.
The gamewinning goal, however, was scored by senior Nick Bonacci who buried a feed from sophomore Brian Koch with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter.
"Our team earned it all afternoon," said Dartmouth coach Bill Wilson, whose squad picked up its first win of the season. "I think they did a good job all over the field, and I think their heart and effort was the number one thing I noticed from the start of the game until the end."
The game's start was delayed about three hours as Scully-Fahey Field was cleared. Friday night's Nor'easter dumped about a foot of snow throughout the region.
In the first quarter, Notre Dame (3-3 overall) jumped out to a 3-1 lead as Brian Hubschmann scored two of his three goals.
Sussman stepped up for the Big Green in the second period as he scored all three of his to go along with the first of Bonacci's two on the day. That gave Dartmouth a 5-3 lead with 3:20 to go until the break.
The Fighting Irish got within one, 5-4, before halftime when Will Yeatman scored at 2:35.
In the third, senior Wilson Handler pushed the Dartmouth lead to 6-4 before Hubschmann and Michael Podgajny evened the game at six apiece.
Bonacci scored the only goal of the fourth quarter. "I thought that goal was really indicative of the type of game it was because we had three attackmen fighting for the ball at the midline. Everyone of them touched the ball before we scored the goal, so I thought it was a great effort."
In the nets, freshman Michael Novosel made eight saves for the Big Green. Notre Dame had come into the game averaging 10.4 goals per game that included a season-high 16 at Drexel four days ago.
"Mike Novosel did a great job in the goal," said Wilson, "and Ryan O'Connor's one of our communicators, and he did a very good job of holding the guys together. We played a little bit of zone defense today and the guys did a good job."
Dartmouth's other goal was a first-quarter marker by sophomore Doug Rendall. Bonacci added a pair of assists for a total of four points.
