Opening statement'
'I give great credit to the Auburn team. I thought they played really
well. They came up with a great plan, they were smart and they played
hard. We expected a battle. For my team, I thought they showed great
poise. We gave up seven points early and as a team we improved. We knew
we had receivers and quarterbacks that could do that. To be tested away
and by a very capable opponent and answering that test is just what this
team needed. We did not play great football. We are much more capable
than how we played tonight. We, like Auburn, can improve.
This victory over Auburn will be a great game to teach from. Our
coaches and players will have the resolve to eliminate those penalties
and not turn the ball over; continue to run the football like Charles
Scott, a 100-yard back here at Auburn; continue to throw the football
like Jarrett Lee. It was a good start to conference play but there are a
lot of games left.'
On the maturity of Jarrett Lee'
'We have all seen Jarrett throw and play and just getting him
comfortable on the field and with the calls, that was really the issue.
You watch him out there today and you could see that he was having a lot
of fun. He certainly plays and enjoyed the competitive times.'
On the halfback pass for a touchdown'
'It's something that we do. It happened to be the right time for
that play. We needed a fast score. We didn't really plan for it until
this week.'
On what he said to Jarrett Lee after Auburn returned an interception
for a touchdown'
'He's done that before because we throw the football a lot; in
scrimmages and practices, and frankly against all of our opponents.
Auburn made a great call, he needs to just throw that one into the
seats. He understood that. The great thing about competitive people is
that it's not the last play, it's the next play, and he went on to
make a bunch of more plays.'
On the onside kick'
'We felt like we had a decent call there. Our guys really pursue
excellence in those types of plays, so when I have someone who has
skill, it wouldn't be right for me not to call those types of
plays.'
On the LSU running game'
'We played real physical. Our tight ends are real physical and our
offensive line is really big and powerful. The fullback pounds it in
real good. When you try to make a tackle on a 220-pound back, it's
really hard, so there's a physicality that we take a lot of pride
in.'
