COLUMBUS, OH -- Behind five goals and seven points from senior and
Baltimore native Kevin Buchanan, the
No. 16/19 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 8 North Carolina,
14-11 Saturday in a neutral-site game at Boys’ Latin School in
Baltimore. The Buckeyes trailed, 6-5, at halftime but scored the first three
goals of the second quarter to tie the game and take the lead for good. Ohio
State improves to 8-3 this season (3-0 GWLL) and extends its winning streak to
four. North Carolina falls to 7-4 (0-3 ACC).
The Buckeyes return home next Saturday
(April 19) to host Denver at 11 a.m. The teams will meet in Ohio Stadium prior
to the Buckeye football spring game, looking to set the national attendance record
for men’s lacrosse.
Against North Carolina, sophomore
Mario Ventiquattro had a hat trick
in the Buckeye win, with junior Jeff Ryan
posting three points on two goals and an assist. Junior Peet Poillon scored twice and sophomore James Green had a goal and a helper for two
points. Senior goalie Stefan Schroder
had 14 saves in the win.
The Buckeyes led, 2-1, at the
end of the first quarter. Buchanan opened the scoring at 13:19 and junior Poillon
extended the Buckeye lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 5:01. UNC’s
Billy Bitter put the Tar Heels on the boar with a goal with 50 seconds left in
the quarter.
UNC outscored the Buckeyes, 5-3,
in the second quarter to take the lead. Ryan set up Ventiquattro 1:30 into the
second quarter, putting Ohio State ahead, 3-1. The Tar Heels responded with the
next two goals to tie the game at 3-all, as Gavin Petracca scored at 11:30 and
Rob Driscoll tallied at 6:34. After Buchanan scored at 5:13 to break the tie,
UNC scored twice in less than two minutes to take the lead (5-4), with Bobby
McAuley tallying at 3:19 and Petracca scoring at 2:36. Green set up Ryan at
1:46 to again tie the score (5-5), but Nick Tintle put the Tar Heels back ahead
with a goal with 53 seconds left before halftime.
Ohio State tallied four times in
the third quarter and held the Tar Heels to just one tally to take the lead for
good. Green scored at 13:26 of the third. Buchanan set up Ventiquattro for a
man-up goal at 10:32 to put Ohio State ahead (7-6) and then scored a goal of
his own at 9:13. The teams traded goals to close out the quarter, as Michael B.
Burns scored for UNC at 8:31 and Poillon tallied for the Buckeyes at 5:34,
giving Ohio State a 9-7 lead through three quarters.
The teams combined for nine
goals in the fourth quarter, with Ohio State edging the Tar Heels, 5-4. Ben
Hunt cut the Buckeye lead to one (9-8) at 14:17. Ohio State scored the next
three goals, and five of the next six, to take a five-goal lead. Buchanan
scored at 11:55 and 9:02, sandwiching a goal by junior Doug Ruhnke at 10:09. Burns stopped the
Buckeye run with a goal at 6:12 before Buchanan found Ryan at 3:59 and senior Ricky Pages set up Ventiquattro at 1:39.
Burns and Petracca each scored for the Tar Heels in the final minute for the
14-11 final.
Senior Stefan Schroder made 14 saves for the
Buckeyes, including five in the first quarter. UNC’s Grant Zimmerman had
13 stops. Ohio State outshot North Carolina, 49-38, in the game.
The Buckeyes, who entered the
game second nationally in man-up offense, converted 1-of-4 chances and held the
Tar Heels scoreless on all six opportunities.
Ohio State had just nine
turnovers in the game, compared to 18 for the Tar Heels.
Game Notes
The win was the first for the
Buckeyes over North Carolina in the series (1-13).
Buchanan,
who leads the Buckeyes with 29 goals and 49 points, now has 148 (82g, 66a)
points as a Buckeye to tie for sixth in program history (Mike Avery, 1988-91). Buchanan
is on a 40-game scoring streak (78-62-139), has multiple points in each of his
last 23 games and is on a 20-game goal-scoring streak. He has at least five
points in each of his last five games. His seven points are a season best and
tied his career best. The five goals vs. the Tar Heels tied his career best,
first set as a sophomore.
Junior Joel Dalgarno had his scoring streak
stopped at 37 games, marking the first time he was held scoreless in his
Buckeye career.
Ventiquattro had
his second-consecutive hat trick and his third in the last four games. He has
11 goals in the last four games combined.
The Buckeyes have scored 11 or
more goals in each of their last eight games and have double-digit goals in 9-of-11
games this year.
The Buckeye defense allowed more
than eight goals for just the second time this season.
After he was held scoreless in
the season opener, Ryan has at
least one goal in each of the last 10 games.
Poillon has
multiple goals and points in all but one game this season.
Ruhnke is
on a five-game (3g, 3a) scoring streak.

Spring/Sandy Spring Friends). Breschi is a graduate of Loyola Blakefield. The
game was played at Boys’ Latin School, Matthews’ alma mater.
