INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Division I NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Committee announced the field for its championship tournament.The
16-team field includes seven conference champions with automatic
qualification – American East Conference (University Maryland,
Baltimore County), Colonial Athletic Association (Hofstra University),
Eastern College Athletic Conference (Loyola College (Maryland), Great
Western Lacrosse League (University of Notre Dame), Ivy League (Cornell
University), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Canisius College) and
Patriot League (Colgate University). The rest of the field was
selected at large. Johns Hopkins University has won the event
nine times, while Syracuse University has won eight times. Since 1988,
either Syracuse or Princeton has won every year except Johns Hopkins’
2005 and 2007 victories, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s
1991 victory and the University of Virginia’s 1999, 2003 and 2006
titles. Johns Hopkins is the only team to have made the championship
bracket every year except 1971 – 37 times. The Division I
semifinal and championship games, and the Division II and III
championship games, will be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough,
Massachusetts, May 24-26. The Division I semifinals will be televised
live on ESPN2 starting at Noon Eastern time, May 24. The championship
game will be televised live on ESPN starting at 1 p.m. Eastern time,
May 26. The championship hosts are the Eastern College Athletic
Conference and Harvard University. This is one of only two NCAA team
sports, along with women’s rowing, that holds the championships of all
three divisions at a common site. The 2009 championship will return to
