STARS
— Brigham Young quarterback Max Hall tied a school record with seven
touchdown passes as the 18th-ranked Cougars handed UCLA its worst loss in nearly
80 years, 59-0. Hall tied the record shared by Marc Wilson and Jim McMahon
before heading to the sideline midway through the third quarter.
— Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-31
victory over Navy. Lewis extended his school record of consecutive pass attempts
without an interception to 206.
— Minnesota freshman tailback DeLeon Eskridge rushed for 114 yards and three
touchdowns in the Golden Gophers’ 35-23 victory over Montana State. The last
Gophers freshman to rush for at least three scores was Minnesota’s career
rushing leader rusher, Darrell Thompson, who did it on Sept. 13, 1986, against
Bowling Green.
— Missouri’s Chase Daniel completed 23 of 28 passes for 405 yards and four
touchdowns in a 69-17 win over Nevada. Daniel shattered predecessor Brad Smith’s
career school passing record. Daniel has 9,513 yards passing. Smith finished
with 8,799 yards in four seasons as a starter.
— Notre Dame safety David Bruton forced a fumble deep in Fighting Irish
territory late in the third quarter, helping Notre Dame hold off Michigan 35-17.
A week earlier against San Diego State, Bruton forced a fumble inches shy of the
goal line and recovered to spark a come-from-behind victory.
WANT TO GET AWAY?
Pac-10 teams went 1-5 away from the West Coast this weekend. No. 23
California fell at Maryland 35-27. UCLA absorbed a 59-0 whipping at 18th-ranked
Brigham Young. Stanford lost at TCU 31-14. Arizona lost at New Mexico 36-28. And
on Friday night, Washington State was drubbed 45-17 at Baylor. The only bright
spot was No. 18 Oregon’s 32-26 victory at Purdue—in two overtimes.
RIBBIT
With its win over Stanford, TCU improved to 11-2 in its last 13 games
against teams from conferences with automatic BCS berths.
STATS ARE FOR LOSERS
Ohio State outgained USC 177 yards to 172 in the first half. Nevertheless,
the top-ranked Trojans managed to pull out a 35-3 victory over the fifth-rated
Buckeyes.
PAGING JIM BROWN
Syracuse rushed for 48 yards in a 55-13 loss to No. 17 Penn State at the
Carrier Dome. The Nittany Lions had two runners—Evan Royster, with 100 yards,
and Stephfon Green, with 53—outgain the Orange. Brown and other Syracuse
legends returned to campus this weekend to attend the premiere of “The
Express,” a movie about Ernie Davis, who was the star of the unbeaten 1959
Syracuse squad and two years later became the first black player to win the
Heisman Trophy.
BY THE NUMBERS
Michigan has more turnovers (9) than touchdowns (7). … Florida State
improved to 2-0 in the Southern Conference with a 46-7 victory over Chattanooga.
The Seminoles, who are actually members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, beat
Western Carolina 69-0 a week ago. … Second-ranked Georgia held South Carolina
to 18 yards on 16 rushes in a 14-7 victory at Columbia, S.C. But the Bulldogs
gave up 267 passing yards—a bad sign for a team that will meet pass-happy
Arizona State next week in Tempe. … No. 9 Auburn committed one turnover for
every point it scored in a sloppy 3-2 victory over Mississippi State. The Tigers
missed two field goals and gave up a safety on an offensive holding call in
their own end zone.
NO. 1 ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL
Two weeks into the season, Nicholls State remains the only team in the
nation on any level of the NCAA to not play a game. Hurricanes have prevented
the school from keeping its schedule. Now, the rest of the Southland Conference
is facing some of the same—Hurricane Ike wiped out all but three league games
this weekend. Only Southeastern Louisiana, Central Arkansas and Northwestern
State were able to play this weekend.
OUCH!
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during a
35-17 victory over Michigan when an Irish player was blocked into him during a
punt return late in the second quarter. Irish defensive end John Ryan, who is
6-foot-5, 264 pounds, hit Weis in the leg. Weis, who was looking the other
direction, never saw the hit coming and was knocked to the ground. Weis remained
on the sideline on crutches with his leg in a wrap for the rest of the half.
“Tommy Brady’s got nothing on me,” Weis joked afterward about the injured New
England quarterback.
HE SAID IT
“The ACC’s been taking a hit all year. People believe we’re not one of the
top conferences. I believe we are. If people don’t want to believe that, come
play us and see what happens.”—Maryland guard Jaimie Thomas after the
Terrapins’ 35-27 victory over No. 23 California.
“The biggest thing is we need to play with more emotion. Football is an
emotional game and for some reason we’re not flying around like we’ve got to.”
— Illinois coach Ron Zook after the 24th-ranked Fighting Illini edged
Louisiana-Lafayette 20-17.
