AUBURN, Ala. (AP)—LSU made the final big play, and as usual that’s what
settled the annual down-to-the-wire clash with Auburn.
Jarrett Lee and Brandon LaFell hooked up on an 18-yard touchdown pass with
1:03 left to lift No. 6 LSU to yet another dramatic comeback win over No. 10
Auburn, 26-21 Saturday in an SEC West showdown that once again produced a
fantastic finish and wild momentum swings.
The last five meetings have been decided by a collective 19 points in a
rivalry that has produced more than drama. The winner has gone to the SEC
championship game in six of the last eight seasons.
The last eight games in the series had gone to the home team. LSU (3-0, 1-0
Southeastern Conference) also snapped Auburn’s streak of six consecutive
victories at Jordan-Hare Stadium against Top 10 teams.
Lee took over for an injured Andrew Hatch in the third quarter and produced
a series of big plays to make up for a lousy start for LSU. Lee missed his first
five throws, with an interception returned by defensive end Gabe McKenzie for a
touchdown.
Auburn (3-1, 1-1) moved to LSU’s 47 on the final drive, with help from Rahim
Alem’s roughing the passer penalty. Alem atoned with a sack of Chris Todd to
recoup the 15-yard loss.
Todd’s desperation fourth-and-25 pass to Rod Smith came up short of the
first down.
Charles Scott rushed for 132 tackle-breaking yards for LSU, its first
100-yard rusher at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Lee was 11-for-22 for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
Chris Todd had his most productive game as Auburn’s starting QB, going
17-for-32 for 250 yards.
No. 3 Georgia 27, Arizona State 10
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Knowshon Moreno rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns,
A.J. Green caught eight passes for 159 yards and a score, and Georgia scored a
decisive victory.
Making a rare regular-season trip out of the Southeast, the Bulldogs (4-0)
came to the desert with an attitude. They had opened the season atop The
Associated Press Top 25 but twice slipped a spot after victories.
On a 99-degree night in the desert, they hoped to make a statement in a
nationally televised game against the defending Pac-10 co-champions.
The statement: these Dawgs can defend.
The Sun Devils finished with 4 yards rushing on 19 carries. It was Arizona
State’s lowest rushing total since they netted minus-2 against California on
Nov. 9, 2002.
For the Sun Devils, who lost to UNLV one week earlier, it was another
crushing loss in the national spotlight. They fell to 2-11 against ranked teams
in Sun Devil Stadium since 2000, and 3-23 overall against the Top 25 during the
same span.
Georgia sacked Rudy Carpenter four times and harried him on countless other
plays. He finished 23 of 36 for 208 yards and a touchdown.
No. 4 Florida 30, Tennessee 6
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tim Tebow threw two touchdown passes and helped
Florida coach Urban Meyer improve to 4-0 against the self-destructing Vols.
Florida took control on the first play of the game with a 52-yard kickoff
return by Brandon James that kick-started the Gators’ second consecutive
lopsided victory over their SEC East rivals.
The Gators (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) were soon in the end zone,
with Tebow flipping 2-yard pass over the top of the line of scrimmage to Aaron
Hernandez for a 7-0 lead five minutes into the game.
Tennessee (1-2, 0-1) responded with nothing but mistakes, and coach Phillip
Fulmer fell to 5-12 against Florida.
No. 5 Missouri 42, Buffalo 21
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)—Chase Daniel passed for a career-high 439 yards and set
a Big 12 record with 20 consecutive completions, helping Missouri overcome a
rash of errors.
The Tigers (4-0) lost three fumbles in Buffalo territory and special teams
mistakes led to two of the Bulls’ touchdowns, keeping the game close well into
the second half against a 33 1/2 -point underdog. Missouri, which had two turnovers
in the first three games, fell short of 50 points for the first time this
season. The game drew a sellout crowd of 65,556.
Derrick Washington scored on a pair of short runs in the Tigers’ final
tuneup before beginning Big 12 play at Nebraska on Oct. 4. Washington has nine
touchdowns in his first year as starting tailback, and at least two each game.
Ernest Jackson scored all three touchdowns for Buffalo (2-2), on a 97-yard
kickoff return and receptions of 32 and 3 yards from Drew Willy.
No. 7 Texas 52, Rice 10
AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Colt McCoy threw four touchdown passes, setting the
Texas career record, and the Longhorns romped over Rice.
McCoy finished with 329 yards passing and led the Longhorns (3-0) in rushing
for the second time this season with 83 yards on eight carries. Jordan Shipley
caught five passes for 155 yards and touchdowns of 30 and 60 yards in the first
half for Texas.
McCoy’s 5-yard scoring toss to Quan Cosby in the third broke the previous
record of 60 set by Major Applewhite from 1998-2001. Applewhite is now the
Longhorns’ running backs coach.
A third-year starter as a junior, McCoy, who has 62 TD passes, could very
well set just about every passing record at Texas by the time he’s done.
No. 9 Alabama 49, Arkansas 14
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Javier Arenas and Justin Woodall scored on long
interception returns and No. 9 Alabama opened Southeastern Conference play with
a rout of Arkansas.
Alabama (4-0) led 35-7 at halftime, and six of the Crimson Tide’s seven
touchdowns covered at least 25 yards. After Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run,
Glen Coffee made it 14-0 for Alabama on what appeared to be a basic run up the
middle from deep in Crimson Tide territory. Coffee found a hole and suddenly was
in the clear, outrunning the Razorbacks for an 87-yard touchdown.
Arkansas (2-1) had to rally for wins over Western Illinois and
Louisiana-Monroe and couldn’t avoid big mistakes in its first SEC game. Casey
Dick’s pass late in the first quarter was intercepted by Arenas and returned 63
yards.
No. 11 Texas Tech 56, Massachusetts 14
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)—Graham Harrell threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns
and Shannon Woods ran for three scores to help Texas Tech rout Massachusetts.
Texas Tech dominated the Minutemen from the outset. The Red Raiders scored
on six of seven possessions in the first half and Massachusetts couldn’t summon
much resistance the rest of the game.
Harrell, who completed passes to 10 different receivers, threw TDs of 17,
12, 2 and 4 yards—and that was in the first half alone. He was 27-of-34 and no
interceptions.
No. 12 South Florida 17, FIU 9
MIAMI (AP)—Mike Ford ran for two short touchdowns and South Florida
spoiled FIU’s debut in its new on-campus stadium.
Matt Grothe completed 14 of 22 passes for 137 yards for South Florida (4-0),
but was held without a passing or rushing touchdown for just the second time in
his 30-game career.
FIU (0-3), which came in ranked last among all FBS schools in total offense
(178.5 yards per game) and scoring (5.0), got a 61-yard catch-and-run from Wayne
Younger to T.Y. Hilton with 2:03 remaining, setting up Julian Reams’ 1-yard TD
run—the Golden Panthers’ first offensive touchdown this season.
USF linebacker Brouce Mompremier was injured after colliding with teammate
Carlton Williams while attempting a tackle with 6:43 left in the third
quarter.USF officials said Mompremier—a Miami native who had family at the
game—was moving his arms and legs and was expected to remain hospitalized
overnight for tests and observation.
No. 13 Ohio State 28, Troy 10
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Terrelle Pryor took charge of Ohio State’s offense,
throwing four touchdown passes to lead the sluggish Buckeyes over Troy.
In the wake of an ugly 35-3 defeat at top-ranked Southern California,
Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel had said that the nation’s top quarterback recruit
last spring and fifth-year senior Todd Boeckman would split the job 50-50
against Troy (2-1).
Pryor became the first true freshman to start for the Buckeyes (3-1) in 30
years, since Art Schlichter in 1978. He played all but two snaps until the game
was decided.
Pryor’s touchdown passes covered 39 and 16 yards to Brian Hartline, 13 yards
to Rory Nicol and 38 yards to Brian Robiskie. The 6-foot-6 standout from
Jeannette, Pa., who won’t attend his first college class until next week,
completed 10 of 16 passes for 139 yards with one interception. He also ran 14
times for 66 yards.
No. 14 BYU 44, Wyoming 0
PROVO, Utah (AP)—Max Hall threw three touchdown passes and BYU extended
the nation’s longest winning streak with a second straight shutout in beating
Wyoming.
The Cougars (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) have won 14 straight, matching their
longest winning streak of the decade and got back-to-back shutouts for the first
time in 23 years. BYU last held two straight opponents scoreless in 1985,
beating Wyoming 59-0 and Utah State 44-0—identical scores to the 2008
shutouts.
BYU was coming off a 59-0 win over UCLA last week and forced the Cowboys
(2-2, 0-2) into six turnovers, returning two of them for scores. Scott Johnson
ran a fumble back 64 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and David Nixon
had a 19-yard interception return for a TD in the third.
Hall finished 16-for-27 for 189 yards with no interceptions and Austin
Collie had two catches for touchdowns. Harvey Unga ran for one score and caught
a pass for another for the Cougars
North Carolina St. 30, No. 15 East Carolina 24, OT
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Andre Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted
North Carolina State to an upset.
Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes—including a game-tying
5-yarder to George Bryan with 1:12 left in regulation for the Wolfpack (2-2),
seven-point underdogs who hung around all afternoon and never trailed by more
than a touchdown.
Patrick Pinkney was 19-of-32 passing for 210 yards and a touchdown for the
Pirates (3-1), whose BCS-busting hopes are all but over after their second
straight loss to the Wolfpack. Pinkney’s fumble on East Carolina’s third play in
overtime gave N.C. State a shot at the upset.
Brown hurdled defender J.J. Milbrook during a remarkable 16-yard run that
set up the winning score, and finished with 73 yards and a 4-yard touchdown
reception.
Wilson, a redshirt freshman making his first home start, went 21-for-31 for
210 yards and had a 20-yard TD throw to Jarvis Williams.
No. 16 Penn State 45, Temple 3
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Penn State built another huge halftime lead, then
cruised to an easy win over Temple with Hall of Famer Joe Paterno coaching from
the press box in the second half.
Daryll Clark threw two touchdown passes and ran for an 11-yard score and
Stephfon Green ran for 132 yards and a 69-yard TD as the Nittany Lions rolled to
4-0 in beating the Owls (1-3).
Linebacker Navorro Bowman had three sacks and an interception to pace a Penn
State defense that held Temple to 138 yards and 10 first downs.
The 81-year-old Paterno walked gingerly at times along the sideline in the
first half as Penn State built a 31-0 lead, then moved upstairs alongside his
assistants in the second. He had been complaining this week of a sore right
leg.
Boise State 37, No. 17 Oregon 32
EUGENE, Ore. (AP)—Kellen Moore threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns in
his first road start and Boise State upset Oregon as the Ducks’ quarterback
troubles continued.
Jeremiah Masoli, a junior college transfer who was projected as Oregon’s
third-string quarterback going into the season, started but left the game in the
first half with a reported concussion.
Moore, a redshirt freshman, was composed in completing 24 of 36 passes as
the Broncos (3-0) got their first road win over a Pacific-10 team. Vinny
Perretta had three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Oregon (3-1) planned on using both Masoli and true freshman Chris Harper at
quarterback after starter Justin Roper injured his left knee in the Ducks’ 32-26
double-overtime victory at Purdue the previous week.
But combined, they attempted only six passes in the first half as Boise
State took a 24-6 lead.
No. 18 Wake Forest 12, No. 24 Florida State 3
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Sam Swank kicked four field goals and Wake Forest
forced seven Florida State turnovers in running its winning streak over the
Seminoles to three games.
The Seminoles’ offense sputtered all night, losing two fumbles and throwing
five interceptions.
The Demon Deacons (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) squandered repeated
scoring opportunities, too. The usually reliable Swank missed three field goal
attempts and Wake committed two turnovers.
Christian Ponder played most of the first half at quarterback for Florida
State (2-1, 0-1) while D’Vontrey Richardson took over for most of the second
half, but neither was effective. Ponder was intercepted three times and
Richardson twice.
No. 19 Kansas 38, Sam Houston State 14
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)—Todd Reesing threw for 356 yards and two touchdowns,
and ran for another score to lead Kansas over Sam Houston State.
Sam Houston State (1-1) had last week’s game against Prairie View A&M
postponed because of Hurricane Ike and couldn’t practice until Tuesday because
of power outages and cleanup from the storm. Despite the hardships, the Bearkats
didn’t make it easy on Kansas, stifling its running game, repeatedly finding
seams in its defensive secondary.
Kansas (3-1) survived for its 12th straight home win—17th straight in
non-conference. The Jayhawks ran on eight of their first 10 plays and 47 times
overall, hoping to improve on a 105-yard per-game average that ranks 101st in
the nation.
No. 20 Utah 30, Air Force 23
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP)—Darrell Mack scored three second-half
touchdowns, including a 9-yard run up the middle with 58 seconds remaining, to
help Utah rally past Air Force.
The Utes are 4-0 for the first time since 2004, when they went 12-0 in Urban
Meyer’s last season with the team before he bolted for Florida.
Mack and Matt Asiata wore down Air Force by churning through the Falcons’
defense, especially in the second half. Asiata finished with 19 carries for 116
yards, while Mack had 101 on 18 attempts.
Utah (4-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) kept Air Force’s vaunted ground
game in check, allowing just 53 yards. The Falcons (3-1, 1-1) entered the game
with the second-best rushing offense in the nation, averaging 358 yards a game.
No. 23 Clemson 54, South Carolina St. 0
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP)—James Davis rushed for three touchdowns to lead
Clemson’s rout of South Carolina State.
The Tigers (3-1) posted their first shutout in two years and improved to
22-0 against Championship Subdivision opponents.
South Carolina State (2-2) had no answer for Davis and the Clemson offense.
The Tigers’ defense did its part, too. They had three interceptions, one
that Chris Clemons brought back for a touchdown; held the Bulldogs to minus 9
yards rushing in the opening half and had a safety.
No. 25 Fresno State 55, Toledo 54
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP)—Nico Herron knocked down Aaron Opelt’s 2-point
conversion pass in the second overtime and Fresno State held on to beat Toledo.
Toledo coach Tom Amstutz decided to go for the win after the Rockets (1-2)
scored on Opelt’s 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Allen on fourth down
to make it a one-point game.
Opelt was pressured on the final play and forced the ball into coverage.
In the first overtime, the Rockets needed just two plays to jump in front
48-41.
Receiver Nick Moore caught a lateral and then threw a strike to a leaping
Stephen Williams at the 1. Opelt then dove over for a 1-yard for a touchdown.
Tom Brandstater answered with his fourth touchdown pass, a 6-yard throw to
Isaac Kinter that tied it at 48-48.
The Bulldogs (2-1) from the Western Athletic Conference got the ball first
in the second overtime and took just three plays to go in front 55-48. Anthony
Harding’s 23-yard run took the ball to the 2 and Brandstater then dove in on a
1-yard sneak.
Toledo’s Alex Steigerwald sent it into overtime with a 33-yard field goal
with 15 seconds left.
